Difficulty in the areas of communication and social interaction are hallmarks for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This workshop will focus on the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to assist students with ASD who are unable to speak to develop social communication skills beyond the function of behavioral regulation. We will discuss the importance of student participation in peer culture as a critical component for the development of social communication. We will also discuss how to design and use various AAC supports to assist students to expand social communication and participate in the peer culture of their classrooms.
