RESEARCH STUDIES

Listed below are research studies looking for participants. Community Autism Resources is not associated with these research studies, and takes no responsibility for them. Any questions about these studies can be directed to the indvidual researchers. All links below are .pdf format and include detailed information about the study and contact information.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders and the Family: The Institute for Child Development is conducting a research study to understand the daily lives and needs of mothers and siblings of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The study focuses on maternal stress and sibling responsibility with the ultimate goal of improving services to better meet the needs of family members.

  • Prospective Multisystem Evaluation of Infants at Risk for Autism: A research study on the early signs of Autism. This study will monitor the development of infants at risk for Autism Spectrum Disordersduring 7 follow up visits from 2 weeks to 30 months of age.

  • Computer Adaptive Testing of Adaptive Behavior of Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders: This research project is looking at whether a newly developed survey measure is appropriate to capture the achievements and challenges of children and youth with ASD as they develop the skills of daily life. We are looking for parents to review the instructions, items and rating scales we have developed and to give us feedback about these items
  • Autism Cry Research Study: the Brown Center for Children, Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island is investigating signs of autism in early infancy. Researchers will analyze the cries of babies that parents have recorded on home videotapes.

  • Diagnostic Assessment & Hannen More than Words Research Study & for toddlers ages 15 months to 24 months 29 days old: a research study being conducted by Dr. Alice Carter at UMASS Boston, and Drs. Susan Wilczynski and Laura Fisher at the May Institute/ National Autism Center of Randolph. This study is examining the effectiveness of the Hanen More Than Words Intervention, a program that teaches parents how to develop their child's social and communication skills.

  • Longitudinal Study of Language Acquisition in Children with Autism: University of Connecticut is currently in the process of recruiting children for an NIH-funded longitudinal study of language acquisition in children with autism who are receiving Applied Behavior Analysis treatment.

  • ONLINE Survey: Sleepy Time Research: a research team at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in the Division of Pediatric Neurology, led by Dr. Richard Frye, is exploring the sleep habits of children, with or without autism.

  • Emergency Preparedness Needs: Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School E.K Shriver Center want to learn about the emergency preparedness needs of parents of children with disabilities or special health care needs ages birth to 21.

  • Discovering new genes and improved diagnostics: the Autism Consortium have just launched a new study for families that have a member diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study involves providing blood samples as well as an assessment battery including IQ tests, questionnaires and observations. Parents and siblings, along with the family member diagnosed with an ASD, are invited to participate. It's aim is to find new genes involved with ASD and improving diagnostic techniques.

  • Research Study: Understanding the Brain in Autism Spectrum Disorders: Boston University Medical Center, is studying brain processing of emotions in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in males between the ages of 14 and 28.  In collaboration with Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Massachusetts General Hospital and the BROAD Institute, we will investigate the interconnections between genes, brain activity, and behavior in ASD.

  • Research Study: Semantic and Perceptual Processing In Autism: Massachusetts General Hospital is are looking for children on the autism spectrum to participate in a neuro-imaging study (fMRI). We are interested in the children's ability to solve pictorial puzzles in order to understand the relative strengths and weaknesses in autistic cognition.

  • Research Study: On Autism and Developmental Dyslexia: Sponsored by Children's Hospital in Boston MA. Can we learn to diagnose autism before a child's first birthday? Can musical training help struggling readers? How can we best support children with autism and developmental dyslexia? At the Labs of Cognitive Neuroscience at Children's Hospital Boston, we are working to shed light on such questions by learning more about brain and behavior development in infants and children diagnosed with, or at risk for, an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or developmental dyslexia. In gaining a better understanding of these processes, our goal is to contribute to the healthy growth and development of our children.
